2026 Toyota Highlander XLE to Platinum: Every Tech and Safety Feature, Grade by Grade
May 29 2026,
The 2026 Toyota Highlander is offered in seven grades across gas and hybrid powertrains, and the gap between the entry grade and the top of the lineup is wide enough to matter. This guide maps out exactly how technology and safety features change as you move from the XLE through the XSE, Limited, and Platinum — across both gas and hybrid — so you know precisely where each feature enters and what you are getting at each level.
All 2026 Highlander grades are on sale now at Toyota dealers across Canada.
What Every Grade Shares
Before examining what changes, here is what every 2026 Highlander delivers regardless of grade or powertrain:
Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 (TSS 2.5) is standard across the entire lineup. The system includes a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Automatic High Beam, Lane Tracing Assist, full-speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and the Toyota Star Safety System. Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, a backup camera, eight airbags, and a tire pressure monitor with auto location are also standard on all grades.
Every Highlander also includes the Toyota Multimedia system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 7-inch multi-information display, a heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel, the Toyota Smart Key System with Push Button Start, and dual-zone automatic climate control (gas XLE) or three-zone independent climate control (Hybrid XLE and above).
XLE: The Entry Grade
The 2026 Highlander XLE (gas, 8-passenger) opens the lineup with an 8-inch Toyota Multimedia touchscreen backed by Service Connect, Safety Connect, and Remote Connect. Audio is a 6-speaker system. Exterior features include 18-inch alloy wheels and silver roof rails. LED fog lamps are included.
The gas XLE uses Toyota's Dynamic Torque AWD system. The Hybrid XLE matches the gas XLE's feature set and adds Toyota's electronic on-demand AWD system with a separate rear-mounted electric motor, along with an electronic parking brake and chrome roof rails.
Neither XLE grade includes a panoramic moonroof, Drive Connect, or a JBL audio system — those features arrive on higher grades.
XSE: A Sporty Step in a Different Direction
The 2026 Highlander XSE AWD (gas only) is a departure from the XLE in character. It replaces the second-row bench seat with captain's chairs for a 7-passenger configuration, and upgrades the Toyota Multimedia system to a 12.3-inch touchscreen. Audio upgrades to a 1,200-watt JBL surround sound system with Clari-Fi and 11 speakers.
Sport-specific features on the XSE include:
- Sport-tuned suspension and Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD (more performance-oriented than XLE's Dynamic Torque AWD)
- Black 20-inch alloy wheels with black roof rails
- Sport-grade grille and bumpers with smoked headlamp/tail lamp surrounds
- Black mirror caps and unique ambient lighting
- 12.3-inch full digital gauge cluster
- Dual tip exhaust
The XSE does not offer a panoramic moonroof, Drive Connect, or leather upholstery — those features are on the Limited, not the XSE.
Limited: Where Technology and Comfort Step Forward

The 2026 Highlander Limited (gas or Hybrid Limited AWD) is the first grade where the full-technology and comfort package comes together. Both the gas and hybrid Limited grades include:
- Drive Connect added to the Toyota Multimedia system
- 12.3-inch touchscreen (both gas and hybrid Limited)
- 1,200-watt JBL Audio surround sound with Clari-Fi and 11 speakers
- Panoramic moonroof
- Premium LED headlamps
- Leather-trimmed upholstery (heated and ventilated front seats with driver's seat memory)
- Heated rear seats (Hybrid Limited only)
- 20-inch alloy wheels
- Intelligent Clearance Sonar with Rear Cross Traffic Brake
- 120V outlet (gas: 100W / Hybrid: dual 1,500W high-output)
The gas Limited uses Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD with Drive Mode Select and Driveline Disconnect. The Hybrid Limited uses Toyota's electronic on-demand AWD with a rear-mounted motor.
The Hybrid Limited is also available in two cabin configurations: a 7-passenger version with captain's chairs, or an 8-passenger version with a second-row bench seat.
Platinum: The Exclusive Features
The 2026 Highlander Platinum (gas or Hybrid Platinum AWD) adds several features that are not available on any other Highlander grade:
- Head-Up Display (HUD) — projects speed and key data onto the windshield
- Digital Display Rear View Mirror — camera-based rear display unobstructed by passengers or cargo
- Panoramic View Monitor (gas) / Bird's Eye View Monitor (hybrid) — adds a top-down camera view around the vehicle
- Rain-sensing wipers
- Heated second-row captain's chairs (Hybrid Platinum only)
- Unique 20-inch alloy wheels with Platinum-grade exterior and interior design finishes
Both Platinum grades replace the second-row bench seat with heated captain's chairs, reducing capacity to 7 passengers.
